Nosebleeds due to Heart Fire

Epistaxis is extremely common in children. Yesterday, a 12 years old patient contacted me via facebook to arrange for an appointment to treat his frequent nosebleeds.

Initial observation seems to indicate he's an Earth body constitution, which means he would enjoy food, sensitive, passionate about life and other people's welfare a lot. Earth people are usually wider and bigger build. When asked if he has any other symptoms, he said that he has constant diarrhoea and finds it hard to let go of criticism (no matter how harmless it is). He has rosey cheeks, tiny pimples 1-2 inches from the nose on both cheeks and on his forehead (his forehead is also in a redder tone). My initial speculation was Large Intestine and Lung (Metal) heat. However, with the diarrhoea, redness on the face and his sensitive and meticulous but not sad or teary character (Lung controls Sadness), it's more related to the Small Intestine and Heart Meridians. So in this case, his diagnosis would be Earth constitution as a base with Small Intestine and Heart Fire that caused diarrhoea, nosebleeds and pimples. The treatment would be to calm Small Intestine and Heart Fire through acupuncture and a diet consist of Coix Seed water, Lotus seeds and bitter tasting food.
